An Iron Chef Fans Diary - April, 2001

April 3rd Elaine bought me a rolling pin so I could make pasta.

Sunday, April 6th, I found Stephanie Masumura's www.ironchef.com
with descriptions of the battles. Thanks to her comments I was able to
be well prepared. Her email is ironsteph@excite.com.
I guessed at what the shrimp filled pork roll would be like and baked
it ahead of time.

Sunday, April 6th, 2001
Main Ingredient: Jinhua Pork
Cooking Style: French vs. Japanese
Iron Chef: Hiroyuki Sakai Challenger: Shuzo Shimokawa
This came out the best one so far. My pork roll matched Sakai's.
He wrapped the ends of his rolls in foil to avoid browning them.
I spent much of the next week trying to draw some good pictures of the dishes.
This turned out to be a waste of time. The bigger pictures weren't that much
better than the quick sketches that I did during the battle and colored in later.
Elaine suggested that I stay with the quick sketches, just color them in.

Saturday, April 7th, 2001, Battle Ray
Main Ingredient: Stingray
Cooking Style: French
Iron Chef: Hiroyuki Sakai Challenger: Yoshihide Koga
After tormenting my family with squid, I skipped this battle.

Friday, April 13th, 2001, Yogurt Battle
Main Ingredient: Yogurt, 30 kg. made especially for the show
Cooking Style: French-Italian
Iron Chef: Chen Kenichi Challenger: Itoh Genichi

The best I could do was Tofu Rice with Hot Sauce and a Buttery Soup with Tofu and Shrimp.

Saturday, April 14th, 2001, Eggplant Battle

Main Ingredient: Kamo Eggplant
Cooking Style: Italian
Iron Chef: Chen Kenichi Challenger: Kawaguchi Sousei
I made Eggplant Soup with Ginger and Fried Eggplant with Hot Sauce.

Sunday, April 15th, 2001 Udon Battle
Main Ingredient: Udon Noodles
Cooking Style: French vs. Edo (traditional Japanese)
Iron Chef: Hiroyuki Sakai Challenger: Tooru Komori
This was one of those times that the challenger won !
I made Canned Tuna Fettacini Noodle Soup with Carrots and Green Onion
and Canned Medium Shrimp Stir Fried with Fettacini Noodles.

Friday, April 20th, 2001, Abalone Battle
Main Ingredient: Abalone (shellfish)
Cooking Style: Neo Japanese vs. Seaweed expert
Iron Chef: Masaharu Morimoto Challenger: Takeshi Kajimoto
Another time that the challenger won !
I had never seen abalone before, I had bought albacore tuna.

Saturday, April 21st, 2001, Tofu Battle
Main Ingredient: Tofu, 30 pounds especially made for the show
Cooking Style: Japanese
Iron Chef: Masaharu Morimoto Challenger: Takaji Yoshida
A rerun of the March 30th program.

Sunday, April 22nd, 2001, Tomato Battle
Main Ingredient: Tomatoes, various types and sizes
Cooking Style: Italian
Iron Chef: Masahiko Kobe Challenger: Franco Canzoniere
All the dishes were definitely Italian.
I made seven dishes with this battle, including my original cherry tomato raviolis.
Elaine suggested that I start taking pictures of my finished dishes. The first pictures
were crudely posed and were edited later.

Friday, April 27th, 2001, Crab Battle
Main Ingredient: Blue Crab (IC) / Watari Crab (SM)
Cooking Style: Thai vs. Italian
Iron Chef: Masahiko Kobe Challenger: Miyoko Sakai
I didn't do too well here, both chefs were very artistic. The best I could do was crab
sauce on noodles. When I tried again later, this battle led to my first Fake Crab.
